Michael John Benzaia Raises Awareness for Medical Field Off the Screen

Set to speak on the hill

“Through working with the ASRT, I discovered that there a few states that still don’t have any regulations, which was news to me, and several states that have limited or weak regulations regarding medical imaging and radiation therapy. Meaning our patients receive greatly varied standards of care across the country because there is no consistent national requirement and no federal requirement for education and training for technologists who perform CT, X-ray, MRI and the other complicated and intricate exams and therapeutics within the profession,” Mr. Benzaia said, adding that some states such as Alabama, Idaho, & Missouri currently have no regulations for medical imaging and radiation therapy personnel, including any requirement for individuals to hold nationally recognized credentials or pass a nationally recognized competency exam to practice as a medical imaging and radiation therapy professional.”

ASRT partnership

“My mom has guided my journey since. I surrender to something bigger than me, and my mom is in that plan. She’s given me the depths of empathy that I have, which are not just used in the medical field with my patients—it’s used when I take on a character on screen,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have those depths of empathy, and I wouldn’t understand the human condition if I didn’t have this relationship with my mom and then her passing,” Mr. Benzaia said.

“It’s deepened my empathy. I really have a heart for people—a heart for all people—so I want to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard and that everyone’s at the table.”
